Rochefort has a wide variety of tourist attractions such as the Corderie Royale (Royal Ropery) and the National Maritime Museum. Or why not explore the Marais d'Yves and Marais de Moëze coastal nature reserves…
The views are endless and truly exhilarating. Yes, you've spotted the island of Fort Boyard in the distance through the telescope. Nearby are two other islands, Ile Aix and Ile Madame! It's time for an unforgettable boat trip! The forts are real strongholds made of stone, and their imposing silhouettes dominate the seaward approaches to Rochefort. A total of fourteen forts are strung out at strategic points – a reminder of their former role in providing protection for the town's naval base and dockyard.
The site of the Royale Ropery includes the Centre International de la Mer (International Sea Center). This has a permanent exhibition which explains the operation of what was Europe's longest manufacturing site in the 17th century, and there are also temporary exhibitions.
Discover this fortress in the heart of the marshes which was once a hub of the European salt trade. The village then became a military stronghold with impressive monuments. Used as a prison town during the French Revolution, Brouage then languished and was forgotten... The town was founded by Jacques de Pons in 1555 as a hub of the salt trade, and it quickly grew into one of the major ports on the Atlantic coast. Since 1989 it has been a "Grand Site National". Samuel de Champlain – the man who founded the city of Quebec in 1608 – was a famous sailor and a royal cartographer who was born in Brouage. During your visit you can find out about his travels and his life story.
